Did you know?
Coral in shallow water can be exposed to too much sunlight that damage the algae inside the coral. In order to protect itself, the corals fluoresce: creating proteins that act as a sort of sunscreen for the algae inside.
For those of us who don’t fluoresce, here are three sunscreen brands that protect us from the sun, and corals from chemicals.
Raw Elements is the brainchild of Brian Guadagno, a 20-year Ocean Rescue Lifeguard who was searching for a natural alternative to the chemical concoctions currently on the market. With little luck finding one he could trust, he decided to create his own. Props to you, Brian.
The Stream2Sea team describe themselves as “cosmetic chemists and environmentalists, too.” The team has dedicated itself to creating eco-conscious skin care products that protect the skin and the ocean, too. We got the chance to test Stream2Sea at DEMA 2017 and must say: the tinted sunscreen works amazingly on bronzed bodies who want to protect the ocean, without turning a shade of purple.
Thinksport is an entire line of products developed by a team of physicians and scientists focused on the latest chemical and biological science. They’ve created a sunscreen that lives up to their chemical policy. The company has over 35 awards to the name, that’s impressive.
